Cantor Alex Stein possesses a unique, powerful, lyric tenor voice, and is now firmly established as one of the up and coming “Great Cantors” of the new Cantorial world.
Cantor Alex Stein, an Australian Tenor, was born in Sydney to an Orthodox family steeped in Jewish musical tradition for four generations.
Through his Cantorial performances on the bimah, he has delighted audiences in many concerts in large communities of Australia, Israel, Canada, South Africa, New Zealand and the United States. He has appeared in concerts and has shared the bimah with many of the worlds greatest Cantors.
The versatility and repertoire of Cantor Alex Stein is extensive. He sings in six different languages including Hebrew, Classical Yiddish, Ladino, English, Spanish and Italian.
At the early age of seven he sang Chazzanut and Operatic arias at concerts, and by the time he was seventeen years old he was conducting his own High Holiday services at the North Shore Synagogue in Sydney, Australia. At this time Cantor Alex Stein was appointed youngest Cantor in Australia. This is where his full time Cantorial career began.
Aside from traveling the globe concertizing, or davening as guest Cantor in many parts of the world, Cantor Stein also serves on the Board of Directors of the Jewish Ministers Cantors Association of America and Canada, the JMCA, the oldest Cantorial organization in existence, spanning over a century.
In Calgary, Cantor Alex Stein serves on the Board of Directors of the Epcor Centre of Performing Arts, Calgary’s major performance centre, and western Canada’s largest performing arts centre, home to the cities theatre, symphony, ballet and opera companies.
Cantor Alex Stein currently serves as Cantor at the Beth Tzedec Synagogue in Calgary, the largest Synagogue in Western Canada, where he resides with his wife Shoshanah, and their children Mendy, Doron, Meital & Dov.
In August 2009, Cantor Alex Stein will be installed as Senior Cantor at the prestigious Adath Congregation in Toronto, Ontario. With a membership of 2000 families, it serves as one of the largest congregations in North America.
